Vaughn M. Kailian

Chairman of the Board, Cerimon

Vaughn M. Kailian was named Chairman of the Board of Cerimon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., in May, 2005. Additionally, Mr. Kailian serves as General Partner of MPM Capital. Mr. Kailian previously served as Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and was head of the Millennium commercial organization, where he oversaw the integration of the COR Therapeutics, Inc. (COR) commercial organization, expanded the cardiovascular sales effort and led the establishment of the Millennium commercial group, which successfully launched VELCADE. Prior to joining Millennium, Mr. Kailian served from 1990 until 2002 as CEO, President, and Director of COR. He became the CEO of COR shortly after the company was founded, took the company public in 1991, raised almost $1 billion in public market capital, and led the merger with Millennium in 2002. Earlier in his career, Mr. Kailian held various international and U.S. general management, marketing, and sales positions at Marion Merrell Dow, Inc., and its predecessor companies, including President and General Manager, Merrell Dow USA, and Corporate Vice President of Global Commercial Development, Marion Merrell Dow, Inc. He is the Chairman of the Board of ViaCell, Inc. (Nasdaq: VIAC), Elixir Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Ikaria, Inc. He is also a Director of NicOx, S.A., and Windhover Information, Inc. Mr. Kailian is currently a member of the Board of BIO Ventures for Global Health and the Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council at the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Kailian earned his BA degree at Tufts University.

Samuel P. Wertheimer, Ph.D.

Private Equity Partner, OrbiMed Advisors
Dr. Wertheimer joined OrbiMed Advisors in 2000 and is a Private Equity Partner in the private equity funds management group. Dr. Wertheimer’s prior experience includes work in biotechnology finance, technology transfer, intellectual property and research in immunology and molecular biology. Dr. Wertheimer was a Fellow at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Wertheimer received a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from New York University, an M.P.H. from Yale University and a B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University. He has served as a Director of Salmedix and Corus Pharma and currently serves on the boards of several private biotechnology companies including ChemoCentryx, InteKrin and NeurAxon and publicly traded Biodel (NASDAQ: BIOD).

Ansbert Gadicke, MD

Founder, General Partner, MPM Capital
Dr. Ansbert Gadicke is the Founder and a General Partner of the MPM Group. He led MPM’s effort to build its Advisory and Investment Banking business from 1992 to 1996 and started its Asset Management business in 1996. Prior to founding MPM, Dr. Gadicke was employed by The Boston Consulting Group. Dr. Gadicke received an MD from J.W. Goethe University in Frankfurt. He subsequently held research positions in biochemistry and molecular biology at the Whitehead Institute at MIT, Harvard University, and the German Cancer Research Center. He has published in leading scientific publications, including Nature and Cell. Dr. Gadicke is a Director of Arriva Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Cerimon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Elixir Pharmaceuticals Inc., Omrix Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., Nuvios, Inc., Pharmasset, Inc., PharmAthene, Inc., and Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He previously served as a Director of BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (Nasdaq: BMRN), Coelacanth Corporation, Idenix Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDIX), Kourion Therapeutics AG, MediGene AG (Frankfurt: MDG), Viacell, Inc. (Nasdaq: VIAC), and TransForm Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is a member of Advisory Councils for Harvard Medical School and the Whitehead Institute at MIT. Dr. Gadicke serves as the Co-Chairman of the Alumni Association of the Whitehead Institute and serves on the Board of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA).

Paul Hastings

President and Chief Executive Officer, OncoMed Pharmaceuticals
Paul Hastings is President and Chief Executive Officer of OncoMed. Prior, he was President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of QLT, Inc. Before joining QLT in February 2002, Mr. Hastings was President, CEO, and a Director of Axys Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he was responsible for leading the strategic acquisition of Axys by Celera Corporation. Since starting his career in 1984 with F. Hoffman-La Roche, Mr. Hastings has held various positions of increasing responsibility with notable biotech and pharmaceutical companies, including Vice President, Marketing and Sales and European General Manager, Synergen Inc.; Vice President, Global Marketing, Genzyme Corporation; President, Genzyme Therapeutics Europe; President, Genzyme Therapeutics Worldwide; and President, Chiron BioPharmaceuticals. Mr. Hastings holds a BS from the University of Rhode Island. He is also a member of several boards of directors including Viacell Inc. (Nasdaq: VIAC), Arriva Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and BC Leading Edge Endowment Fund.

Denise Pollard-Knight, PhD

Managing Director of Nomura Phase4 Ventures
Denise Pollard-Knight, PhD, is Managing Director of Nomura Phase4 Ventures, an affiliate of Nomura International plc. From January 1999 to March 2004, Dr. Pollard-Knight served as head of Healthcare Private Equity at Nomura International plc, a leading Japanese financial institution. Prior to joining Nomura, Dr. Pollard-Knight was a member of Rothschild Asset Management Ltd., an investment management firm, from January 1997 to January 1999. Dr. Pollard-Knight held several research and development management positions at Amersham-Pharmacia and Fisons plc. Dr. Pollard-Knight holds a PhD and BSc (Hons) from the University of Birmingham in England. Dr. Pollard-Knight completed post doctorate work as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr Pollard-Knight currently serves on the Boards of Idenix Pharmaceuticals, ViaCell Inc, Nabriva Therapeutics and Develogen AG. She is currently a Trustee and a Council Member of the British Heart Foundation serving on the Executive Committee.

James S. Shannon, BSc, MD, MRCP (UK)

President and Chief Executive Officer
Dr. James Shannon joined the Board of Cerimon in October 2008 and was appointed President and CEO of the company in January 2009. Prior to joining the Board, he held the position of Global Head of Pharma Development for Novartis AG based in Basel, Switzerland. After joining Sandoz in 1994 as Head of Drug Regulatory Affairs, Dr. Shannon held a number of significant positions in Novartis including Head of the Integration Office for R&D overseeing the creation of the Novartis R&D groups from those of Ciba and Sandoz and also Head of the Cardiovascular Strategic Team where he oversaw the design and implementation of the clinical trial program for Diovan. Subsequently he was appointed Global Head of Project Management before being appointed Global Head of Clinical Development and Medical Affairs in 1999, a position that he held until 2005 when he was appointed to Head Pharma Development. During these years Novartis was recognized as the leading company in terms of FDA approvals for New Molecular Entities and one of the leading companies with regard to the adoption of novel technology in Development. He first entered the pharmaceutical industry in 1987 joining Sterling Winthrop working initially in Europe and subsequently in the USA, where he held positions of increasing responsibility in the management of Research and Development ultimately serving as Senior Vice-President, Clinical Development. Dr. Shannon is trained in Medicine and Cardiology. He received his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Queen's University of Belfast and is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK).
