Our Scientific & Medical Advisors, which includes prominent physicians, clinicians, and biotechnology industry professionals, provides guidance and counsel on a broad range of scientific and product development issues, including clinical trial design, interpretation of clinical data, and development of regulatory strategy. Additionally, our Scientific & Medical Advisors will play an important role in identifying and advising Cerimon's management team on potential new drug opportunities.
Adrian C. Hayday, MA, PhD

A graduate of Queen's College Cambridge, Professor Hayday obtained his PhD in Tumour Virology in 1978 and then undertook post-doctoral training at MIT. In 1998, after thirteen years on the faculty of the Departments of Biology and Immunobiology at Yale University, he returned to London, and was appointed to the Kay Glendinning Professor & Chair in the Department of Immunobiology at King's College. He is internationally renowned for his work in Immunology and has published over 120 papers. He has worked on chromosome translocations causing B-cell neoplasia, and contributed to the cloning of the T-cell receptor (TCR), in particular the unanticipated TCR-gamma chain gene. Together with long-standing collaborators, Professor Hayday has succeeded in identifying critical roles for gamma-delta cells in primary immunoprotection against solid tumours, and in immunoregulation, particularly with tissues. In 1997, he was awarded the William Clyde DeVane Medal, Yale College's highest honour for teaching and scholarship, and he was elected a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2002. He advises a number of bodies, including the Welcome Trust where he chairs the Funding Committee in Basic Immunology and Infectious Diseases, and sits on the Strategy Committee.
William K. Schmidt, PhD

Dr. William Schmidt is currently the head of NorthStar Consulting, LLC, which specializes in providing advice on preclinical and clinical studies of novel analgesic drugs. Dr. Schmidt was previously VP, Clinical Research, for Renovis, Inc., in South San Francisco, CA, an emerging biopharmaceutical company developing drugs to treat stroke, chronic neurological diseases, and pain. Prior to Renovis, Dr. Schmidt was VP, Scientific Affairs, at Adolor Corporation in Exton, PA, where he was a key member of the team leading to the clinical development and NDA filing of Entereg (alvimopan). Dr. Schmidt continues as a Scientific Advisory Consultant to both Adolor and Renovis.
Dr. Schmidt is Immediate Past President of the Eastern Pain Association, the largest regional affiliate of the American Pain Society. He has over 25 years of pharmaceutical industry experience with a special emphasis on the discovery and development of novel analgesic and narcotic antagonist drugs. He is the co-editor of Pain: Current Understanding, Emerging, Therapies, and Novel Approaches to Drug Discovery (Marcel Dekker, 2003; 2nd edition in preparation). Dr. Schmidt received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of California, San Francisco. Following his postdoctoral fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Schmidt joined DuPont Pharmaceuticals (later the DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Company) where he helped to develop Nubain, Trexan, ReVia and the oxycodone-ibuprofen formulation used in Combunox™.
Gary S. Firestein, MD

Dr. Gary Firestein received his AB degree summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1976 and subsequently received his MD degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1980. After training in Internal Medicine at UCLA, he began his Rheumatology fellowship at UCSD in 1983. In 1988, he joined the faculty at UCSD School of Medicine as Assistant Professor of Medicine. Four years later, Dr. Firestein was hired by Gensia, Inc., as Director of Immunology. In 1996, he was recruited back to UCSD as Professor of Medicine and, in 1998, was named Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology. In 2003, Dr. Firestein was also selected to serve as the founding director of the UCSD Clinical Investigation Institute.
Dr. Firestein’s research interest at UCSD has focused on the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Firestein received the prestigious Carol-Nachman Prize, which is an international award given for rheumatology research, in 1998 and the Lee C. Howley Prize in rheumatology in 2006, which is the highest honor awarded by the Arthritis Foundation.
Dr. Firestein has written over 225 articles and chapters and has edited or written 4 books, including Kelley's Textbook of Rheumatology. He served as the Deputy Editor of Arthritis & Rheumatism and has sat on the editorial boards of many other journals. He is also past Chairman of the FDA Arthritis Advisory Committee.
Gary Patou, BSc, MB, BS, MD, FRCPath

Dr. Gary Patou is an Executive Partner at MPM Capital. Previously, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Oscient Pharmaceuticals, Inc., following its merger with GeneSoft Pharmaceuticals in 2004. As President of Genesoft, Dr. Patou was instrumental in applying for and obtaining FDA approval of the Company's lead product, FACTIVE® tablets. Prior to joining Genesoft, Dr. Patou worked at SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, now a unit of GlaxoSmithKline, as Senior Vice President & Director, Project and Portfolio Management, managing all of the company's pharmaceutical development projects including FACTIVE, as well as FDA-approved products Avandia, Paxil and Augmentin. Dr. Patou also served as Director and Vice President of Anti-Infective Development where he managed the development of a broad line of anti-infective products, including oral, IV and topical antibiotics. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Oscient (NASDAQ:OSCI) and Xenon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Concurrent to his post at MPM Capital, he also served as interim EVP and CMO of Cerimon Pharmaceuticals as well as Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Board where he continues to be a member. He also served as interim CMO of Peplin, Ltd. Dr. Patou has held a number of academic appointments at University College & Middlesex School of Medicine in London and holds medical and medical Ph.D. degrees from University College London.
Wendye Robbins, MD

Wendye Robbins, MD has distinguished herself as a leading innovator, entrepreneur, clinical scientist, and practitioner in the field of pain pharmacology. She is a frequent lecturer and author in the field of pain and active researcher in the field of neuropharmacology.
Dr. Robbins holds an ongoing appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Robbins was formerly Director, President, Chief Medical Officer, and Scientific Founder of NeurogesX, Inc.
Dr. Robbins is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business. She received her MD from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She undertook post graduate training in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and in anesthesiology and pain medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutions. Dr. Robbins is board certified in anesthesiology with added qualifications in pain.
